Kelly's favorite T

All of us in Corp. Mktg have posted pics with us wearing our favorite T. Here is mine- although slightly hard to distinguish the actual image due to a very hairy large dog.

The image is a silhouette graphic of dogs of all shapes and sizes saying hello to each other. Check out Threadless for a better shot! Enjoy and remember to be kind to all animals on this planet.

Threadless

The newest thing around here lately is our discovery of Threadless T-shirts in Chicago. It all started when our graphic artist, Dana, turned us on to their website. If you've never been, you should definitely take a look at threadless.com. They only print original designs from up-and-coming artists, they print five new designs a week and they usually go for between $10 and $20 each. Look for Dana and Kelly's favorites soon, and if you like them as much as we do, please, please, please blog us back with pictures of your favorites. - Matt

Apple Dewplings

Here's a good recipe for fall that involves two apples (I get mine at Tuttle's Orchard), a stick of butter, two tubes of ready-bake crescent rolls, a cup of sugar, two tablespoons of cinnamon and one 12-ounce can of Mountain Dew. All you need is a 9" by 13" glass baking dish and a pyrex cup to melt your butter in the microwave. Turn the oven on to 350, and before you melt your butter, rub down the inside of the baking dish with your stick of butter. Then melt the butter in the microwave and add in your sugar and cinnamon. Peel, core and cut your apples into eighths and wrap each apple slice in its own triangle of crescent roll dough. The only thing left is to line the baking dish with the 16 apples in blankets, pour the butter-sugar-cinnamon mix over the top and dump the whole can of Mountain Dew over the top of that. That's it. Bake it at 350 for 45 minutes. - Matt

swim upstream salmon

This is without question the easiest and best way to prepare salmon for a group.

1 salmon filet (about 13" long - or a pretty huge slab o'fish with skin on one side) Costco has great salmon, check them out

1/4 cup dijon mustard

1/2 cup panko bread crumbs (don't try to substitute- use Panko)

1/2 cup chopped flat leaf parsley - mix together with Panko

salt and freshly ground pepper

Preheat oven to 450. Line a cookie sheet (with sides) with parchment paper. Pat fish dry with paper towels and spread top (no skin side) with dijon mustard. Generously salt and pepper fish then sprinkle with Panko/parsley mix. Use all of the crumbs and herbs - this will create a nice crust. Bake in center of oven for 15-18 minutes. Top should be nicely browned, fish will be perfectly cooked in center.

Fried Green Tomato Recipe
I love the movie Fried Green Tomatoes and ever since I saw it, I make them every summer before the tomatoes ripen. Here is a super easy recipe - so much so...I don't include measurements.

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Slice green tomatoes into 1/4-1/2-inch slices. Salt each slice, then set them in a colander to release some of their moisture. Heat up olive oil (it's better for you) in a skillet on medium-high heat. Rinse some of the salt off of the tomatoes then press them into a plate full of cornmeal. Make sure both sides are covered in cornmeal then put them in your hot skillet. Fry until golden brown. Serve 'em up hot! I like mine with a little Tabasco sauce - YUM! Dana

Eggs
Sad news. Our bird family disappeared. I'm not sure if something ate them or they skipped out on us in the middle of the night. When Dana and I went back to check for baby birds, all we found was an empty nest and a bunch of ants. I've always supected there might be pumas or something in the woods behind the office. We'll keep our eyes open and maybe try again next spring. - Matt

Northfield Model Tour

We just shot this! It's our new Courtyard model at Northfield. We'll post a smoother version on the website soon, but it's worth checking out now, even if the footage is a little bumpy. All the new models at Norhfield are open, so if you get a chance to stop by, they look even better in person. - Matt

Mission Haiti
I took a vacation last week to go on a medical mission trip to Haiti, and I can't wait to go back! It was an amazing trip! We saw 2,500 Haitians over the course of 5 days in five different churches. Our clinics consisted of a medical staff of RN's, doctors and dentists. The people in the community would come in and then the doctors and dentists would prescribe meds or pull teeth. I worked in the pharmacy and helped fill the orders. Most of what we gave out was medication that Haitians just don't have access to - antacids, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, multi-vitamins, etc. There were some medical problems that we couldn't help, but the people we were able to give relief to were so thankful. They even prepared meals for us when the price of rice is so high. It opened my eyes to see how much we as Americans have, and I hope to never take that for granted. It was a privilege to serve the Haitians, and I'm excited for opportunities to continue to do so here until I can go again in Feb.'09 (at least that's the plan). If you'd like to learn more about Mission Haiti and the hospital they're building in Saintard go to http://www.missionhaitimidwest.org/. Bon Dieu beni ou! Dana

Eggs!

We definitiely have eggs in the bird house, but I'm afraid we missed the blue bird scouts by a week or two. These look like wren eggs. I didn't count on smaller birds moving in. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what hatches. - Matt

Time Lapse Construction

Here's a little behind-the-scenes construction footage of our Smart Space Safe Place display at the Indy Baby Expo last weekend. It's our first time-lapse sequence, so you know it's just a matter of time before we show an entire house from start to finish in fast-forward mode. -Matt

Bluebirds of Spring

I was in Madison Indiana last weekend and I noticed a few bluebird scouts flitting around the fencerows. That means they should be here in Indianapolis in another week or so. Everyone should have a pair of bluebirds just outside their window. They don’t mind being around people at all, they’re cute as cufflinks and they really do have a cheery little song. If anyone’s interested, I might add a DIY segment to build your own bluebird house next week. The only thing you really need to get just right is the diameter of the entrance hole, and the distance from the ground. If I don’t get it filmed, I’ll at least throw in a set of plans and instructions in next week’s blog post. I’m sure I can dig up enough scrap lumber from one of our jobsites to make three or four. That’s it! I’ll put up a house here at work and if we get a pair to move in we can keep tabs on them. - Matt

Disc golf and fun with Indy Parks!

Spring is finally in the air and I could not be more ready! This is without a doubt my favorite time of year: flowers in bloom, and the anticipation of summer vacations around the corner (and my May 31st wedding!). How do you spend spring days? Did you know that Indy Parks maintains nearly 200 parks properties across Marion County? They offer amenities you wouldn’t normally think of including historic sites, conservatories, and disc golf courses (they actually offer leagues for this sport) along with the traditional pools, community centers, ball fields, trails, and playgrounds. Even better, you can enjoy most all of their offerings at no cost.

With so many parks across the city, you’ll find several of them located very close to our communities. For example, Eagle Creek Park is just a couple of minutes from Branches on the west side of Indianapolis and Homecoming actually has a dedicated 42 acre park within the south side community. We take pride in our parks organizations and encourage you and your family to spend some time in your favorite park this spring. For more information on our involvement as a “Partner with Parks”, visit the Indy parks website.

Stay tuned, our wonderful parks organizations have some great family-friendly events coming this summer and C.P. Morgan is pleased to be a part of some of them. -Blair

C.P. Morgan Gets Baby Fever

As a newly expecting mommy, I keep my eyes and ears open for events in the Indy area that relate to anything baby. That’s why I was excited to hear about our partnership with the Indy Baby Expo. Scheduled for April 26-27 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. I will be able to get a lot of information about nutrition, health and safety, and the latest in baby products all in one place. By that time, I will be 5 months along and ready to think more seriously about preparing our home for a new baby. C.P. Morgan’s participation at the Baby Expo will include a “Smart Space Safe Place” demonstration area with a kitchen, bathroom, and stairway to show ways to protect children from areas around the home that can be dangerous. I’m proud that the company I work for is taking the initiative to educate and inform those who care for children, especially 1st time parents like me. If you have some extra time, you should check it out. After we’ve planned on how to get our home ready for our baby, then we can move on to a really tough decision – baby names! - Kristen.

Bad Squirrel

Dana helped me make Bad Squirrel. He’s hanging in my cube. Comedy – if it didn’t make you laugh it’d make you cry. It says something about shelter being at odds with nature though – feeding the fireplace with wood from your tree house. I don’t think we really notice what we’re wasting until we see some ridiculous, full-blown example of it. It reminds me to keep an eye on my own excesses, whether I keep them in check or not. But I think we owe it to each other to at least try. A good example is a product like pre-engineered lumber for floor joists. It’s lighter, stronger, spans more distance, and has less environmental impact than something like a conventional two-by-ten. The result is a home that’s easier to build, has more open spaces, and costs less per square foot than a home designed around dimensional lumber. I know it’s not enough to save the planet, but it’s a step in the right direction. And at the end of the day, if it saves a few trees, maybe we bring a few more squirrels over to the good side. - Matt

Photo Shoot
I just recently travelled to Charlotte to assist on a photo shoot of our model home interiors. It was a nice break to get out from behind the computer and do some literal hands-on work. We had a good time with the photographer. He had a really good eye, and captured some very nice shots. I also found my perfect home. This model had a beautiful interior! Every room had me saying, "I want that" just like a little kid. I was drawn to the hearth sitting area in the kitchen. It was SO inviting, we took a few to sit and cozy up to the fire. I dreamt that it was my home and the photographer had come to shoot my crib. All I needed was a fridge full of sodas, and I could've been on MTV. Anyway, I'm saving his photos so someday when I'm ready to build my dream home (when I've made a bundle on web design)I can point to the photo and say, "I want that!" - Dana

Color-Mapped Community Coming Soon

Claybridge at Cumberland Point is our first community to offer a color-mapped streetscape, so that no two homes will be the same, and each will compliment the other. It’s a place where everyone’s individual style is showcased, and the combined effect is a neighborhood that shows its true colors beautifully. And we’re only offering our newest series of floorplans at Claybridge. They’re designed to fit the way you live, accentuate your personal taste, and look and feel as comfortable and confident as you are at your very best. And that’s the way it should be in a place you call home. - Matt

Standby Flight
We played Yahtzee on the floor of the Charlotte airport terminal while we were on standby to get an earlier flight home. If you’ve ever played, you probably have an idea about what happened. I think it was Bev who actually rolled the point, but no one can help yelling out, “Yahtzee!” when all five dice fall out with the same number -- I know I did anyway. It was kind of like Haiku, where you get a glimpse of something perfectly ethereal from what would normally be a mundane passing of time – a sort of freeze-frame that flips your stomach a little. So, for the record, if you do yell out Yahtzee in a crowded airport terminal, time does expand and pause a few split seconds, and a thousand strangers do go completely silent as they all turn at once to stare only at you. Fantastic! Actually, I think there was a soft, fabric sound from everyone turning to see what was happening – something like birds ruffling their feathers as they settle in to roost. - Matt

Charlotte RV Trip
“I’ve been around this place all my life and it just kind of soaked into me.”

I heard somebody say that a few days ago, and I couldn’t have summed up our trip any better. That’s what we were looking for and we found it almost everywhere we went. It’s an indelible sort of warmth that rubs off on you from people and places as genuine as the ones we found -- the sort of thing that makes you feel at home no matter how many miles you travel. It soaks in, and a little of it sticks with you. That’s the best kind of souvenir you could possibly take back. We soaked up our share, that’s for sure. - Matt
